چکیده

Liquid retention in micron and millimeter scale devices is important for maintaining stable interfaces in various processes including bimolecular separation, phase change heat transfer, and water desalination. There have been several studies of re-entrant geometries, and very few studies on retaining low surface tension liquids such as fluorocarbon-based dielectric liquids. Here, we study retention of a liquid with very low contact angles using borosilicate glass capillary tips. We analyzed capillary tips with outer diameters ranging from 250 to 840 μm and measured Laplace pressures up to 2.9 kPa. Experimental results agree well with a numerical model that predicts burst pressure (the maximum Laplace pressure for liquid retention), which is a function of the outer diameter (D) and capillary exit edge radius of curvature (r).

The Ballistic Behavior of High Strength, Low Alloy-100 Steel at Sub-zero Temperatures

The ballistic response of the high strength, low alloy (HSLA-100) steel at ambient and temperatures of -400°C, -800°C and -1960°C is investigated in this work. Lambert-jonas equation is used to fit the experimental results into a curve. The effect of quenching on ballistic behavior of HSLA-100 is also studied. The experiments are conducted on 3mm thick rectangular specimens impacted by blunt ti...

Determination of Surface Tension and Viscosity of Liquids by the Aid of the Capillary Rise Procedure Using Artificial Neural Network (ANN)

The present investigation entails a procedure by which the surface tension and viscosity of liquids could be redicted. To this end, capillary experiments were performed for porous media by utilizing fifteen different liquids and powders. The time of capillary rise to a certain known height of each liquid in a particular powder was recorded. Two artificial neural networks (ANNs) were...

Capillary Phenomena on a Liquid Surface

Contraction of a liquid sheet of an incompressible Newtonian fluid in a passive ambient fluid is studied computationally to provide insights into the dynamics of capillary wave created during contraction. The problem composed of the Navier-Stokes system is associated with initial and boundary conditions that govern the time evolution of the capillary wave and the pressure and velocity fields wi...
